Jeramie and Amber do Paleo

We asked Jeramie and Amber to write about their Paleo experience because I thought it might help some of you.  They were Paleo first and became connected with CrossFit through that lifestyle.  They recently attended a Whole 9 seminar in Winston Salem and came back fired up so I thought it would be a good time to share their experience:

In September of 2010, Amber and I started looking into changing our diet after she got the diagnosis of Insulin Resistance during one of her rotations for PT school. The doctor advised her that if she didn't make a change in her diet, she would develop full-on Type 2 Diabetes within the next year. Not wanting to take any meds or get involved in chronic cardio, we embarked on a journey to control her insulin via dietary changes. We started on the newer version (2010) of the Atkins Diet after reading, "The New Atkins for a New You." This diet not only caused the fatigue to vanish, eliminate symptoms of hypoglycemia and drastically improve our sleep patterns, but also caused us to get back to our pre-marriage bodies that had slowly disappeared.

Our low-carb journey was assisted by several podcasts, including Living La Vida Low-Carb with Jimmy Moore. His show is an interview format where he interviews different experts and  allows the listener to come to their own conclusion. The featured guest for one episode that peaked my curiosity was Robb Wolf, who promotes a paleo lifestyle and dietary changes from a biochemist's perspective of analyzing the current research and applying it appropriately. His interview convinced me that taking clues from our paleolithic ancestors and eating real food is optimal. He also convinced me that some sort of activity, preferably high intensity short duration, is crucial to my health and longevity. Enter CrossFit.

CrossFit has been such integral part in changing our lives for the better. We are so blessed to part of such a supportive and like-minded community that is always pushing to be better in all aspects of their lives.

Amber has not had her blood work checked since her initial diagnosis because our insurance company won't cover it. However, the way we look, feel and perform has improved exponentially. I would encourage anyone to try the paleo diet/lifestyle change for 30 days and closely monitor changes in their body, sleep and mood. If you don't like it, just go back to the way you were operating. I suggest the Whole 30 program which is on the Whole 9's website for free. What have you got to lose?
